1.
While this version is instrumental, the words we all sing in rounds together at gatherings are as follows: Ah poor bird, take thy flight, far above the sorrows of this dark night! Ah poor bird, wings so worn, can you see the dawn of tomorrow’s morn?

Feeling So Cold (Ballad of a Winter Soldier) Oh, been feeling so cold. Oh, been feeling so cold. Oh I still own all of my soul, but everything else of mine’s been sold. Oh, been feeling so cold. Oh, been feeling so cold. Oh, I tell you no lies. Oh, I tell you no lies. Well, we told ourselves when those kids were dying, oh we had no other choice, ‘cause the evil they was hiding. Oh, I tell you no lies. oh, I tell you no lies. Oh, now my fingers so thin. Oh, now my fingers so thin. Well, I had so many fine friends back then, when the war it had me killing evil women and men. Oh, now my fingers so thin. Oh, my fingers so thin. And oh, I fought in that war. Oh, I fought in that war! Well she died in her living room, screaming what for, I shot that old woman and she fell to the floor, and oh, I fought in that war. Oh, I fought in that war! And oh, I won lots of medals. Oh, I won lots of medals. Yeah, ground them children yeah into the gravel and I watched those big old cities being leveled and oh, I won lots of medals. Oh, I won lots of medals. But oh, when I came home. Oh, when I came home. Came home called a savior but left all alone, waking up every night still a’ hearing their moans, and oh, when I came home. Oh, when I came home. And oh, it’s the truth, they will say. Oh, it’s the truth they will say: well, we made big money by the war in those days, and we never let poor kids get in our way, no, oh, it’s the truth, they will say. Oh, it’s the truth they will say! But oh, I’ve been asking the old. Oh, I’ve been asking the old. Many poor fight and die in these rich folks’ wars but never heard of no poor getting rich folks’ gold. Oh, I’ve been asking the old. Oh, I’ve been asking the old.

Simple Gifts 02:08
'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free, 'tis the gift to come down where we ought to be, and when we find ourselves in the place just right, 'twill be in the valley of love and delight. When true simplicity is gain'd, to bow and to bend we shan't be asham'd, to turn, turn will be our delight, till by turning, turning we come round right.

Once I hear a little bird singing very clearly. And the bird that I heard sang: God loves me dearly! Sang, God loves me dearly. Well, please stay now and tell me how, little bird, you know it? Every day, come what may, many kind things show it. Many kind things show it! Sun and rain, ripening grain, food and shelter given. Leafy trees, all one sees, under this blue heaven! Under this blue heaven. Then the bird that I heard sang so very clearly: God loves you. Off she flew. Loves you very dearly! Loves you very dearly.

about

AND THE BROKEN GROUND BEGAN TO RISE! CREDITS, MUSINGS.

This album is a story. It begins with only instruments, and a distant marching can be heard amidst the rounds of “ah poor bird”. Next we are introduced to a lone figure, broken and isolated, alienated from self, friends, creator, creation—uprooted by the machine for a “higher good,” only to be used, abused and then spit out with no connections. Then the work begins—the work of mending, inward and outward. Of radical unlearning and re-rooting. Of pursuing and being pursued by the rest of the neighbors—plants, people, coyotes, frogs, trees—of singing until being sung by the song, turning ‘til we come round right, practicing the presence of G-d, of the individual feeding and being fed by the familial and collective, and being embraced by an older presence, one that is worth living and resisting for.
The songs are old and new, intentionally repetitive, seasonal and long, and hopefully unoriginal. The health of the branch lies in the roots and the soil.
Take it easy, but take it!
