*BONUS* Trooper's Lament & 홀로아리랑 (Live outside the DMZ)

from 이산 Live at No Country: An Introduction to Seth Mountain by Seth Mountain 이산

/

about

"TL" is one of many profound and hard-hitting history ballads to flow out of the pen and life experiences of my favorite American soldier-turned-Hobo Anarchist Folksinger, Utah Phillips.

For Phillips, an American Soldier stationed around the DMZ not long after the cease-fire in Korea, this song was more than a little autobiographical.

A separate book could be written as a follow-up to each verse in this song, dealing with the topics Utah demands we stop ignoring, including the dehumanization of war, the isolation of the returning soldier, the poison of orientalism and racism, the dangers of us/them and following orders blindly, the camptown epidemics and the many casualties of unchecked male power aggression during war--especially women and children--and the living bleeding legacy of US Imperialism in Korea today.

Personally I hold Trooper's Lament to be one of the most profound, smart, heartbreaking, and important folk songs ever made by an English speaking American. I wish it were required studying and listening for every US citizen.
