Black Lives Matter. Justice for the family of Eric Garner!

Recording collected by David Fuller in Montavilla District, Portland, Oregon. November 2016.
Follows the traditional work ballad "900 Miles".

Out in famous New York City
Famous for its lack of pity
That's where a man named Eric Garner used to live
He was big and black and proud
Had friends and family all around
And despite so many hassles with police
Garner's neighbors knew him as a man of peace


Eric Garner was in town
So the cops all gathered round
They said he tried to sell some untaxed cigarettes
Garner said it wasn't true
But he broke a bigger rule
In a land where if you're black then you're a threat
The cops showed everyone black lives don't matter yet

Well he told the cops I'm tired, I'm so tired of being harassed
It was a brave thing for a poor black man to say
And before he died he cried I can't breathe eleven times
When Pantaleo grabbed his neck and pulled him down
And four other cops helped smash his face into the ground

After Garner stopped resisting, well the cops just stood there watching
they picked his pockets and they rolled him on his side
Several minutes slowly passed
EMTs they came at last
No CPR, they said he still was breathing then
An hour later Garner'd never breathe again

And the medical report said it was a homicide
Said they killed him when they wouldn't let him breathe
But there was no murder charge, seems it was never in the cards.
Despite the testimony and the video,
The judge and jury said the cops were free to go.

Yeah Eric Garner couldn't breathe with a system round his neck
That kills a black man just for holding cigarettes.
Home of the brave, land of the free
What's this mean for you and me?
It's all a sham if black folks' lives don't
matter yet
(If you're not white or rich then you don't matter yet)
Some kind of freedom if the people here can't breathe

그 유명한 도시 뉴욕은

인정 사정 없기로 유명하지

그곳은 에릭 가너라는 사람이 살던 곳

그는 큰 몸집의 자부심 있는 흑인이었고

친구와 가족은 모두 이웃해 살고 있었지

경찰과의 잦은 마찰에도 불구하고

이웃들은 그를 평화의 사람으로 기억했다네



어느 날 에릭 가너가 시내에 있는데

많은 경찰이 그의 주변으로 몰려와

그가 불법으로 담배를 팔려 한다고 주장했지

그는 그게 아니라고 항변했지만

동시에 더 큰 법을 위반한 셈이었지

이 땅에서 흑인은 그저 위험한 존재에 불과하니까

경찰들은 흑인들의 삶이 소중하지 않다는 것을 증명한 것이라네



그는 그 경찰들에게

“나를 좀 내버려둬요. 괴롭힘을 당하는 일에 이젠 정말 지쳤어요.” 라고 말했지
