artistreader as deep as it is wide is this album. a gem of an outing by an artist who strikes me, throughout his recording history, as truly humble. sad'appy songs that sings us! absolutely love how Seth enfolded his audience into his space that quickly becomes sacred. Favorite track: Colors (live, with a story).

about

Vol. 2 of the personal anthology, "songs that sing me."

These are not songs I have written. Rather, they are roots, and more accurately, they are songs that have played a big part in writing me.

To put it another way, I sing these songs because they first sang me. I am grateful for them, as I am grateful for my physical human friends and family. They are lovers and mentors.

Many sing of harsh realities. Others testify to the reality of Love, and a peace that passes understanding.

All are "folk songs" by their own rights--although a few are newer than others. They all pass Woody Guthrie's test:
they comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.

I have only been left with two choices after hearing each of these songs: let them sing me and try to open up my heart enough to hear and live out what they demand of me, however impossible--or try to ignore them, at my own peril.

In my case, once heard, they could never be unheard. And I am grateful for that. They have been a strong rod of discipline and correction to me, as well as a loving mother; a lighthouse and a plumb-line.

I hope they grace you in similar ways.

This particular batch is made up mostly of songs that tell it like it was and is and remind all with ears to hear how difficult but worth it the fight for freedom and justice is--and how necessary. Also included are a few precious gems that remind me of how beautiful this world is and how wonderful and mysterious it is simply to be alive, and what an unspeakable, priceless treasure it is to be loved, in spite of it all.

There are works by several well-known songwriters here, saints sacred and secular, who have since left the stage--Utah Phillips, Derroll Adams, Pete LaFarge, Woody Guthrie, Joseph Scriven, Charles Wesley. John Prine, and John Brill.

There are also a few songs originally given to the world by artists still living: Donovan and Buffy Sainte-Marie on the superstar end of things, and my dear brother Samuel Lockridge in the not-yet-world-renowned-but-equally-deserving realm.

You can hear Samuel's gorgeous original recording on his album, When I Rise. To listen to (and support Sam by purchasing!) that album and others, please visit samuellockridge.bandcamp.com

All songs have been played here as I feel them, and shared with you according to the ability I have, and in the way that seems most right to me. I have sought accuracy of spirit rather than clean technique, as anyone with an ear for studio alchemy (and sophistry?) will notice right away. How I understand, sing, and am sung by each of these songs is by no means the only, or one right way, to do so. Like any songwriter or song-sharer, "I am less than the song I am singing," but when I am singing and being sung by, "I am more than I thought I could be."

The songs speak for themselves, through us--and we find our voice and how to say what needs to be said through them.
They have much more to say than any one sharer can handle. I strongly encourage you to look up and listen to as many versions of each of these songs as you can--starting with whatever performances you can find by the original songwriters. and in the case of the writers still living, support them however you can.

Many loving thanks to Joe Kim, for opening his home studio to me and doing such a wonderful job encouraging honest expression, letting things be, then adding only the barest (yet wonderfully enhancing) of cosmetic touches to these tracks while mixing and mastering. Without your friendship, patience, and skills this anthology never would have happened.

All songs recorded in Joe Kim's house in Seoul, Fall-Winter 2022.
